MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Freshman forward
Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, OK) netted two goals to lead the fourth-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Augsburg Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis.
Box ScoreKarty scored a pair goals within the first minute of both the second and third periods to give UW-Stevens Point (12-3-1) its sixth straight win. Karty's two goals against Augsburg (9-6-0) gave him three on the weekend and four in four games this season.
UW-Stevens Point has now won all eight of its games against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opposition this season, including four wins in the last two weekend.
The Pointers took a 1-0 lead into the second period after
Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) opened the scoring, putting home his third goal of the season off an assist by
Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) at the 17:01 mark of the first period.
Just 38 seconds into the second period, Karty tallied his first goal of the afternoon, giving the Pointers a 2-0 lead early in the second frame. Midway through the second,
Jono Davis (La Verne, CA) kept the momentum with UWSP, increasing the lead to three with assists coming from
Ethan Strong (Kinmount, ON) and
B.J. Duffin (Red Deer, AB).
Nick D'Avolio (North Riverside, IL) and
Stephan Beauvais (Shelby Township, MI) set up Karty for his second goal of the afternoon 26 seconds into the third period to make it 4-0. Corbin Chapman was the lone goal scorer for the Auggies, who had won eight of their last 10 games, scoring at the 7:41 mark of the final period.
Both teams were unsuccessful with the man advantage, UWSP going 0-4 and Augsburg 0-1.
The Pointers outshot the Auggies 30-26. Sophomore goaltender
Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI) earned his ninth win of the season by making 25 saves, while Augsburg's Brandon Jones made 25.
The Pointers will return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play next weekend, traveling to UW-Eau Claire on Friday Jan. 22 before returning home to play UW-River Falls on Saturday Jan. 23 at K.B. Willett Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. for both games.
