Sharkey scores twice, No. 4 Pointers win fifth in a row

WINONA, Minn. - Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) had two goals and Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) and Alex Brooks (Grand Rapids, MI) each had three assists lead the fourth-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team to a 6-2 win over Saint Mary's (Minn.) on Friday evening at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.

Box Score

Sharkey extended his point streak to five games with his pair of goals for UW-Stevens Point (11-3-1), which won its fifth straight game. The win over Saint Mary's (7-7-2) gave the Pointers wins in all seven of their games against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opposition this season.

Goals from Sharkey and Eliot Grauer (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) gave UW-Stevens Point a 2-0 lead by the 17:11 mark of the first period before SMU's All-American Martin Gruse cut the UWSP lead to one, scoring 41 seconds after Grauer's goal.

Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, OK) scored from Grauer and Jono Davis (La Verne, CA) 4:43 into the second frame, netting his second of the season. Sharkey added his second of the night and eighth of the season from Cornellier and Mark Bittner (Crookston, MN/Crookston).

The Cardinals would get one back in the second period on a goal from Chad Cesarz to cut the UWSP lead to 4-2 leading into the third period. Just 58 seconds into the final period, Evan Dixon (Novi, MI) scored a 4-on-4 goal to give UW-Stevens Point a 5-2 lead and Grauer netted a one-timer on the power play from Karty and Brooks at 11:51 to close the scoring.

UW-Stevens Point went 1-for-3 on the power play and killed off all five Saint Mary's power-play chances in the game. The Pointers' penalty kill helped hold the Cardinals offense, which entered the game seventh in the country in scoring (4.47 goals/game), to just two.

Since returning from break, UW-Stevens Point has scored 22 goals in its last three games and the Pointers have scored at least five times in each of the last five contests.

The Pointers outshot the Cardinals 32-22 in the game. Sophomore goaltender Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI) recorded 20 saves, including 10 in the second period, while Jake Tugnutt made 26 for Saint Mary's.

UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 16 by taking on Augsburg at Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis, Minn. at 4:05 p.m. The Auggies fell 2-1 to No. 7/8 UW-Eau Claire on Friday evening.
