FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Two goals from
Kat Nejedlo (Fond du Lac, WI/Fond du Lac) and one from
Cara Lemirande (Janesville, WI/Craig) helped the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team to its third win in as many days with a 3-2 win over Marian on Sunday afternoon at Blue Line Family Ice Center.
Box Score Two goals by Nejedlo gave UW-Stevens Point (9-6-2) a 2-0 lead in the second period before Marian (3-11-0) got one late in the period to go to the third down just a goal. However, Lemirande gave the Pointers a two-goal lead again that they would hold onto.
Nejedlo opened the scoring at 11:42 of the second period with a power-play goal from Lemirande and
Ellie Punnett (Hailey, ID/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame). The senior grabbed her second less than four minutes later while the Pointers were shorthanded.
The Sabres got a goal from Courtney Wittig at 17:37 of the second to cut their deficit in half but Lemirande cashed in on the power play at 5:14 of the third to make it 3-1. Marian's Rian Lennon made it a one-goal game at 6:55 of the third but
Lisa Fowle (Wausau, WI/Wausau West) turned aside the only two shots she faced the rest of the way.
In a game that included 13 penalties, UW-Stevens Point was 2-for-5 on the power play, while Marian was 1-for-7. The two power-play goals marked the first time since Nov. 7 that the Pointers have scored multiple power-play goals in the same game.
UW-Stevens Point outshot Marian 33-24 in the game, including 26-15 over the final two periods. Fowle made 22 saves in her fifth win of the season, while Ali Glazer made 30 stops in the loss for Marian.
UW-Stevens Point continues non-conference play with a single game at St. Norbert on Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Resch Olympic Pavilion in De Pere. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
