STEVENS POINT, Wis. –
Kelsey Schneider (Malone, WI/Fond du Lac) and
Sarah Meylor (Watertown, WI/Watertown) tallied one goal each as the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team earned its first win of the season in its home opener against Concordia-Chicago on Friday evening at the Point Soccer Bowl.
Box Score The Pointers tallied the first two goals of the game over the first 85 minutes. The Cougars answered back late in the second half but weren't able to even the score with just four minutes remaining.
UW-Stevens Point improved to 1-1-0 overall with the win, while Concordia-Chicago dropped to 0-2-0 with the loss.
Schneider ran onto a ball over the top from
Jillian Ross (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee), cut inside and found the back of the net at the 3:18 mark from the right side of the box, just over Cougar goalie, Maddie Kroll in the first half.
Both defenses played tough for the reminder of the game until
Sarah Meylor (Watertown, WI/Watertown) extended the Pointers' lead at the 77:24 mark weaving through the Cougars' defense scoring unassisted from the top of the box.
Kirsten Churkey nearly had the shutout, but allowed a late goal from Elizabeth Sanders in the 86:07 minute of the game. The Cougars totaled 12 shots but only four were on goal.
The win marked
Dawn Crow's first victory at UW-Stevens Point.
UW-Stevens Point is back in action Saturday, Sept. 5 visiting Macalester at 4:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
