WINONA, Minn. – The seventh-ranked UW-Stevens Point volleyball team opened the 2015 season with a pair of 3-0 victories at the 2015 Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic tournament, hosted by Saint Mary's University.
Game 1 BoxThe Pointers defeated Wisconsin Lutheran College 3-0 in the season-opener, holding the Warriors to just .094 hitting, while the offense fired on all cylinders, tallying 45 kills in three sets to hit .262.
Ellen Drewry (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) led the way with 12 kills, while
Emma Brunkhorst (Germantown, WI/Germantown) tallied 11 and
Kelly Cefalu (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) added nine in the victory.
Brittany Laffin (Carpentersville, IL/Hampshire) made her debut for the Pointers, tallying 42 assists running the Pointers offense.
Bri Piepenbrok (Merrill, WI/Merrill) tallied a team-high 18 digs and
Hannah Picel (West Bend, WI/West Bend West) chipped in 16.
For WLC, Britley Grulke had 12 kills and Megan Wiezbicki tallied 14 digs.
Game 2 BoxIn the nightcap, Brunkhorst led a consistent Pointers offense to a 3-0 victory over Luther. UW-Stevens Point trailed 22-14 in the first set before rattling off nine consecutive points and went on to take it 27-25. UWSP also overturned a 20-17 deficit in the second. In the third, the Pointers pulled away early and cruised to the 25-17 win.
The Pointers again hit over .200 and capitalized on 23 Luther errors to start the season 2-0.
Brunkhorst tallied 13 kills ,while
Gabby Thomas (Henderson, MN/LeSueur-Henderson) added nine and
Bella Nelson (Luck, WI/Luck) eight. Drewry, Brunkhorst and Cefalu each recorded four blocks on the day and Laffin again orchestrated the offense to the tune of 39 assists.
Marie Krengel (Eagan, MN/Eastview) had a team-best 15 digs.
The Pointers (2-0) return to action on Saturday, Sept. 5 with matches against Lakeland College and host Saint Mary's. Games get underway at 10 a.m.
