STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Maggie Washelesky's goal inside the final 10 minutes was the only goal of the game as Carthage defeated the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team 1-0 in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Point Soccer Bowl.
Box Score Washelesky broke the deadlock by converting a breakaway following a long ball over the top for her fourth goal of the season for Carthage (2-5-0) with 8:11 remaining. The Lady Reds outshot UW-Stevens Point (2-7-0) 18-12 in the game, including 10-4 in shots on goal.
Despite being held scoreless, the Pointers had a couple clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities in the game.
Lexi Ahrens (Appleton, WI/Appleton East) had a chance from the left side of the box inside the first two minutes and Carthage goalkeeper Kate Perry made a diving save to deny
Elise Thuot (Hatley, WI/D.C. Everest) on a free kick from 20 yards out later in the first half.
Prior to Washelesky's goal, the Lady Reds had scoring chances too but
Kristen Churkey (Mosinee, WI/D.C. Everest) made nine saves, including a kick save on Corinne Brennan in the first 15 minutes and a leaping save to push a shot by Lauren Szumski over the bar late in the first half.
Jillian Ross (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) led UW-Stevens Point with three shots in the game, while Rachel Post had three shots on target for Carthage. Perry made four saves for the Lady Reds to earn the win.
The Pointers are back in action at home on Saturday when No. 11 UW-Whitewater visits the Point Soccer Bowl for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
