Women's soccer drops season opener at St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Brielle Bierman recorded two goals and an assist for St. Thomas as the Tommies blanked the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team in the season opener for both teams on Tuesday afternoon at South Field.

Bierman, the Tommies' leading returning scorer, opened the scoring in the 31st minute and capped the scoring in the 88th minute for St. Thomas (1-0-0). The Tommies outshot UW-Stevens Point (0-1-0) by a 23-4 margin.

Bierman's strike was the only goal in the first half but Paige Wilberding doubled St. Thomas' advantage less than five minutes into the second half. Hayley Engel set up each of the Tommies' first two goals.

Sydney Presley and Mallory DeBroom added second-half goals for St. Thomas. DeBroom and Bierman each assisted on the other's goal in the final 10 minutes.

Sarah Meylor (Watertown, WI/Watertown), Kortnee Hass (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg), Abbie Ullrich (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) and Kayla Huber (Wausau, WI/D.C. Everest) each tallied one shot for UW-Stevens Point.

Kristen Churkey (Mosinee, WI/D.C. Everest) made four saves in each half for the Pointers, while Tarynn Theilig made one stop for the Tommies.

UW-Stevens Point plays its first home game under first-year head coach Dawn Crow on Friday, Sept. 4 when the Pointers host Concordia-Chicago at 4 p.m. at Point Soccer Bowl.
