Heil and Richards post runner-up finishes on first day of WIAC Championships

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Logan Heil (Weston, WI/DC Everest) and Jordan Richards (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) posted runner-up finishes in the hammer throw and long jump to highlight the UW-Stevens Point men's outdoor track & field team's performance at the 2015 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships after day one of the meet at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex on Friday.

Heil placed second in the hammer throw with a personal-record throw of 56.92 meters (186' 9").

Richards also set a personal record in the long jump, taking second with a jump of 7.30 meters (23' 11.50").

The two runner-up finishes helped UW-Stevens Point earn 34 points on day one, leaving the Pointers four points behind third-place and third-ranked UW-Whitewater and nine ahead of fifth-place and second-ranked UW-Eau Claire. Top-ranked UW-La Crosse leads the way with 66.83 points, followed by UW-Stout with 59.50.

The Pointers also had several competitors qualify for Saturday's event finals. Matt Gerber (Tomahawk, WI/Tomahawk) qualified for the finals in both the 100-meter (10.85) and 200-meter dashes (21.73). Both times were personal bests for Gerber.

Calvin VanRyzin (Appleton, WI/North), Dan Sullivan (Elkhorn, WI/Elkhorn) and Ryan Wierzba (Rosholt, WI/Rosholt) qualified fourth, fifth and sixth in the 800-meter dash. Van Ryzin (1:53.22) and Wierzba (1:52.34) set personal records in the process, while Sullivan finished in 1:52.18.

UW-Stevens Point also will have three representatives in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles, as Takuto Kobayashi (Franklin, WI/Franklin) (55.21), Tim Baker (Eau Claire, WI/North) (55.50) and Cory Valiquette (Green Bay, WI/Green Bay SW) (56.07) each recorded the fastest times of their careers in the preliminaries.
