STEVENS POINT, Wis. – No. 11 UW-Whitewater held the UW-Stevens Point softball team to six hits, as the Pointers fell to the Warhawks 7-2 and 7-0 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at McCarty Memorial Field.
No. 11 UW-Whitewater 7, UW-Stevens Point 2 | Box UW-Stevens Point (8-17, 1-5 WIAC) led 2-0 on a two-run home run by
Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin) in the bottom of the third inning but Bekka Houda shut down the Pointers the rest of the way. UW-Whitewater (17-3, 6-0 WIAC) hit four home runs in support of Houda in the game.
After Allen gave the Pointers a 2-0 lead with her team-best fourth home run of the season, the Warhawks tied the game at 2-2 on solo home runs by Deven DuCharme and Kelynn Sporer in the fourth and sixth innings.
The score would remain 2-2 until UWW scored five runs in the seventh. DuCharme hit her second home run of the game, a three-run shot, and Joe Jablonski followed with a solo home run for the Warhawks.
Houda earned the win by holding UW-Stevens Point to two hits in seven innings.
No. 11 UW-Whitewater 7, UW-Stevens Point 0 | Box Sporer threw a four-hit shutout for UW-Whitewater in game two, while walking one batter and striking out seven. Mallory Klotz led the Warhawks' offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
UW-Whitewater scored a run in the first and two in the third and Klotz's run-scoring single in the fourth made it 4-0. Later, DuCharme hit her third home run of the afternoon, a two-run shot, as part of a three-run seventh.
Sydney Gorges (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) went the distance for the sixth time in 12 starts for UW-Stevens Point this season and
Bailie Sheahan (Salem, WI/Wilmot Union) hit two doubles to account for half of UWSP's four hits.
UW-Stevens Point takes a break from WIAC play with a doubleheader at Lawrence on Tuesday, April 14, beginning at 3 p.m. in Appleton.
