APPLETON, Wis. –
Miranda Morrison (Madison, WI/East) allowed just one run in a complete game for the UW-Stevens Point softball team in game one of a split non-conference doubleheader against Lawrence University, as the Pointers won game won 5-1 and lost the nightcap 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Whiting Field.
UW-Stevens Point 5, Lawrence University 1 | Box Morrison held Lawrence (17-9) to just four hits in her third complete game of the season for UW-Stevens Point (9-18). The sophomore allowed just three runners to reach scoring position in the game and retired nine batters in a row at one point.
The victory improves Morrison to 5-7 on the season after striking out six batters with just one walk over the seven innings. The six-strikeout game was the second-straight such performance for the sophomore.
Jordon Schreiner (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) had her fourth three-hit performance of the season, including a two-run home run to right in the fifth to give the Pointers a 4-0 lead. Earlier,
Sam Raddant (Shawano, WI/Shawano) tripled in a run in the third before scoring on a single by
Maddie Sawdey (Medford, WI/Medford). Raddant was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the game.
Cori Semler (Hartford, WI/Hartford Union) doubled in
Jodi Vanderford (Kenosha, WI/Mary D. Bradford) in the sixth for her third RBI of the season and the final UW-Stevens Point run of game one. Kara Vance tossed all seven innings for Lawrence, giving up 12 hits, as eight UWSP players registered at least one hit.
Lawrence University 6, UW-Stevens Point 3 | Box Liz Barthels held UW-Stevens Point scoreless for the first six innings of the nightcap and held off the Pointers' seventh-inning rally to give the Vikings a 6-3 victory. Lawrence built a 6-0 lead after six innings before UW-Stevens Point scored three in the seventh.
The Pointers had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the seventh before Raddant got UWSP on the board with a sacrifice fly, scoring
Samantha Olson (New Lisbon, WI/New Lisbon). Two batters later with the bases loaded again, Schreiner knocked in a run with a single to the pitcher and another run came around on a throwing error on the play.
UW-Stevens Point then had the game-tying run at the plate but Barthels got a liner to shortstop to end the game. Barthels allowed two earned runs over the complete game, striking out five and walking none.
Lawrence jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the first inning, as the Vikings sent eight batters to the plate in the frame. The Vikings added two in the fourth on a two-run triple by Anna Wawiorka and pushed across another fun in the fifth.
UW-Stevens Point continues a stretch of four road doubleheaders this week with a twinbill at St. Norbert on Thursday, April 16, beginning at 3 p.m. in De Pere.
