STEVENS POINT, Wis. –
Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon) hit three home runs and drove in 10 runs to power the No. 7 UW-Stevens Point baseball team to a sweep of UW-Stout by scores of 12-0 and 12-2 in the team's opening Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader of the season on Friday afternoon at University Field.
No. 7 UW-Stevens Point 12, UW-Stout 0 (7 inn.) | BoxUW-Stevens Point (11-3, 2-0 WIAC) scored five runs in the second and six in the fifth to run away with the seven-inning win in game one. Hanke reached base in all four times, going 2-for-2 with two walks and five RBI, including a fifth-inning grand slam to center field.
Mitch Beau (Fond du Lac, WI/St. Mary Springs) picked up the win with a seven-hit shutout of UW-Stout (9-4, 0-2 WIAC). The senior fanned six and got 10 groundball outs without walking a batter to improve to 2-0 on the season.
A two-run single by
Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol) opened a five-run second for UWSP, scoring
Ray Greco (Downers Grove, IL/North) and
Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas). Hanke added a RBI single in the frame for the Pointers, who tallied three hits and used two Blue Devil errors in the inning.
Greco plated Coady with a single to center in the third before the Pointers tacked on six in the fifth. The Pointers hit two home runs in the inning, as
Peter Strommen (Madison, WI/East) hit his first home run in a UWSP uniform and six batters later Hanke slugged his grand slam.
Spetz scored twice and drove in two runs, while
Ben Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. UWSP took advantage of seven walks and stole five bases, the most the team has recorded in over a year since the team swiped seven bases at UW-Oshkosh on April 1, 2014.

Taylor Carlson (Madison, WI/LaFollette) closed out the game with a line-drive home run to left.
UW-Stout opened the scoring on a home run by Josh Halling in the second but UW-Stevens Point took the lead with a four-run third and never looked back. Hanke hit a two-run shot to center during the inning and Carlson added an RBI single.
Hanke's second two-run shot of the game, his fifth of the season, accounted for UWSP's final two runs of a four-run sixth. The Pointers started the frame with three successive singles, as
Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH) drove in Gerber.
On the mound,
Mark Kowalke (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo) earned the win by giving up just one earned run on four hits in seven innings. The victory levels Kowalke's record at 2-2 this season.
Alex Thompson (Tomah, WI/Tomah) tossed a scoreless eighth in relief.
Hanke extended his hitting streak to 14 games, giving the senior hits in every game this season. McHugh and Spetz stretched their hitting streaks to 13 and 12 games, respectively, and seven UWSP hitters registered multi-hit games.
UWSP's 24 runs and 30 hits were the team's most in a doubleheader since the Pointers tallied 29 runs on 30 hits in a sweep of UW-Stout in Menomonie on May 3-4, 2014.
The two teams play their second-straight doubleheader on Friday, April 3, beginning at noon at University Field.
