CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team lost a pair of close games, falling to Greenville 7-5 and Benedictine 3-2 on Monday evening.
Greenville 7, UW-Stevens Point 5 | BoxTiffany Samsoe hit two home runs and drove in six runs to help Greenville (2-2) get out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and the Panthers held off UW-Stevens Point (5-6) in the late innings.
Samsoe hit a two-run home run in the first and a grand slam in the second for Greenville. The Pointers came back to get within one, 6-5, in the sixth.
Alison Kuhne (New Berlin, WI/West ) sparked the rally with a RBI double in the fourth and a two-run single in the fifth, while
Jodi Vanderford (Kenosha, WI/Mary D. Bradford) plated a run with a single in the sixth.
The Panthers added a run in the top of the seventh and held off UWSP in the bottom of the frame. UW-Stevens Point had two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh but Becca Oldham escaped the jam.
The Pointers outhit the Panthers 12-9 in the game, led by Vanderford's three hits. Four other hitters had two hits. On the mound,
Sydney Gorges (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) threw five innings in relief, giving up just one unearned run.
Benedictine 3, UW-Stevens Point 2 | BoxHolly Haberkorn singled home the game-winning run for Benedictine (3-3) in the bottom of the seventh to give the Eagles a win in a low-scoring game. She also tossed a complete game on the mound, yielding just two unearned runs.
After the Eagles scored a run in the first, the score remained 1-0 until UW-Stevens Point took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth when
Katie Uhlenbrauck (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) singled through the left side, scoring
Maddie Sawdey (Medford, WI/Medford) and
Sam Raddant (Shawano, WI/Shawano).
Benedictine came back with a run in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single by Brittany Clark to knot the game at 2-2. Gorges pitched the first 6.1 innings for UWSP but took the loss to fall to 3-3 this season.
UW-Stevens Point closes out its trip to Florida with a split doubleheader on Tuesday, March 17. The Pointers play Gallaudet at 5 p.m. EST and Calvin at 7 p.m. EST.
