AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The No. 13 UW-Stevens Point baseball team banged 15 hits to overcome six errors and defeat Rutgers-Camden 11-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Field #3.
Box ScoreUW-Stevens Point (4-2) scored four times in the first but Rutgers-Camden (2-2) came back with four in the fifth to tie the game. However, the Pointers scored three in each of the sixth and seventh innings to pull away.
Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol) sparked the UWSP offense by going 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.
Kyle McHugh (Polonia, WI/Rosholt) had a team-best three RBI, while
Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) and
Peter Strommen (Madison, WI/East) each drove in two runs.
Strommen's two-run double capped a four-run first inning for UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers had four hits in the inning and took advantage of a walk and a Scarlet Raptors' error.
Mitch Beau (Fond du Lac, WI/St. Mary Springs) held Rutgers-Camden scoreless until the Scarlet Raptors scored four times on just one hit in the fifth. The Pointers committed five errors in the frame as Rutgers-Camden tied the game at 4-4.
It did not take long for UWSP to reclaim the lead, as McHugh's sacrifice fly in the sixth put the Pointers ahead 5-4. Coady followed with an RBI single and later scored on an error to make it 7-4.
UW-Stevens Point tacked on three more in the seventh on a two-run single by McHugh and a sacrifice fly by Coady. Spetz capped the scoring in the eighth with his third hit of the day, an RBI single to shortstop.
Beau earned his first collegiate win with five innings of one-hit ball. The senior gave up four unearned runs and walked five with three strikeouts.
Heinrich Walder (Rosholt, WI/Rosholt) extended his scoreless inning streak to nine to start his collegiate career, shutting out the Scarlet Raptors for three innings, while
Ryan Williams (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) tossed the final inning.
