Cole Erickson (Deerfield, WI/Deerfield) was victorious on his collegiate debut to earn the UW-Stevens Point baseball team a split of a doubleheader against Anderson on Saturday, as the Pointers won game two 7-1 after losing the opener 6-2.
Anderson 6, No. 10 UW-Stevens Point 2 | BoxAnderson (5-2) posted two three-run innings in the first three frames, capitalizing on five UW-Stevens Point (2-2) errors and went on to win the opener 6-2. Connor Morris led the way for the Ravens offensively, going 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI.
Anderson starter Jake Eaton held the Pointers scoreless until
Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) hit a solo home run to right to lead off the fourth inning. Eaton threw a complete game, giving up two runs on seven hits, while striking out six.
UW-Stevens Point added a run in the fifth when
Kyle McHugh (Polonia, WI/Rosholt) singled home
Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol).
Mark Kowalke (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo) threw all seven innings for the Pointers but took the loss, giving up just one earned run.
No. 10 UW-Stevens Point 7, Anderson 1 | BoxAfter giving up an unearned run in the first inning, Erickson settled down and shut out the Ravens over the next four innings to win on his debut. The freshman gave up just four hits and two walks in five innings and fanned three.
UW-Stevens Point's offense backed Erickson's strong outing with 14 hits, led by
Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH), who went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Gregorich's solo shot to right put UWSP up 3-1 in the fifth and was his first home run of the season. The senior is slugging .929 through the first four games of the season.
The Pointers tied the game at 1-1 on a run-scoring single by Pete Strommen in the second inning and took the lead on a single by
Ray Greco (Downers Grove, IL/North) to score Strommen in the fourth. After Gregorich's home run, Greco knocked in another run with a single as part of a four-run sixth.
UW-Stevens Point will take on No. 8 Southern Maine in a top-10 matchup on Sunday, March 15 at 1:30 p.m. EST.
