CLAREMONT, Fla. –
Jordon Schreiner (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) knocked in five runs as the UW-Stevens Point softball team split its two games on Friday, March 13 by defeating The Sage Colleges 7-4 before falling to SUNY Oneonta 7-2.
UW-Stevens Point 7, The Sage Colleges 4 | Box Schreiner homered and drove in four runs to power UW-Stevens Point (4-3) past Sage (3-6). The senior got the Pointers on the board early with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first.
UWSP added a run in the second on a passed ball but the Gators came back to tie the score at 4-4 in the top of the fourth on a three-run shot by Katy Rimawi.
The Pointers came right back with three in the bottom of the fourth. After the first two batters were retired, the next six hitters reached base, four on hits, including a two-run double by
Maddie Sawdey (Medford, WI/Medford) and a run-scoring single by Schreiner.
Sydney Gorges (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) picked up win number three on the season by going five innings before giving way to
Breanna Ellison (Pepin, WI/Pepin) for the final two frames. Gorges gave up three earned runs and struck out five.
SUNY Oneonta 7, UW-Stevens Point 2 | Box Brianna Rivera hit three doubles, which plated four runs, and Jennifer Brocco held UW-Stevens Point scoreless for the first five innings as SUNY Oneonta (7-2) established a 6-0 lead after five.
Rivera had a two-run double as part of a three-run third and doubled home a run in a three-run fifth for the Red Dragons. She also added an RBI double in the sixth.
The Pointers finally got to Brocco in the top of the sixth as Schreiner drove in Sawdey with a single to left. UWSP also got a pinch-hit home run from
Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, WI/Whitnall) in the top of the seventh.
Brocco held UW-Stevens Point to one run on three hits in six innings.
Miranda Morrison (Madison, WI/East) struck out seven on the mound for the Pointers but gave up six runs in five innings.
UWSP plays a pair of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponents in No. 13 St. Thomas at 3 p.m. EST and Bethel at 5 p.m. EST on Saturday, March 14.
