CLERMONT, Fla. – Trailing 3-0 going to the sixth inning, the UW-Stevens Point softball team scored three in the sixth and seven in the seventh to defeat Bowdoin 10-3 on Thursday.
Box Score Bowdoin (2-1) scored single runs in the first, third and fifth off
Sydney Gorges (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) but UW-Stevens Point (3-2) stormed back in the late innings to pick up the to open its early-season trip to Florida.
With runners on first and second in the top of the sixth,
Bailie Sheahan (Salem, WI/Wilmot Union) started the comeback with an RBI double to center, scoring
Jordon Schreiner (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna). Two batters later,
Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin) scored on a passed ball and
Samantha Olson (New Lisbon, WI/New Lisbon) followed with a two-out single to center to score Sheahan and tie the game at 3-3.
After Gorges escaped a two-out, two-on jam, the Pointers scored seven runs on five hits in the seventh. Schreiner knocked in the eventual game-winning run with a one-out double to center, plating
Sam Raddant (Shawano, WI/Shawano).
Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, WI/Whitnall) followed with a pinch-hit, run-scoring double to make it 5-3. After a walk and a hit batter,
Cori Semler (Hartford, WI/Hartford Union) and Sam Olson each had RBI singles before three-straight, bases-loaded walks extended UWSP's lead to 10-3.
Gorges went the distance for UW-Stevens Point to pick up her second win of the season. The sophomore gave up two earned runs on seven hits and did not walk a batter.
Raddant was 2-for-3 and reached base in four of her five trips to the plate. Allen was 2-for-2 with two walks, while Olson went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
Bowdoin starter Alana Luzzio cruised through the first five innings but was eventually saddled with the loss. Luzzio registered nine strikeouts but walked five batters.
UW-Stevens Point plays twice on Friday, March 13. The Pointers play Oneonta at 9 a.m. EST before taking on The Sage Colleges at 1 p.m. EST.
