Softball edges St. Kate's, falls to Gustavus Adolphus

ROCHESTER, Minn. – For the second day in a row, the UW-Stevens Point softball team split its two games, defeating St. Catherine 1-0 in eight innings before falling to Gustavus Adolphus 7-2 on Sunday, March 1 at the Rochester Dome.

Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin) knocked in the only run of the game with an eighth-inning walk-off sacrifice fly for UW-Stevens Point (2-2). St. Catherine (0-1) starter Krista Flugstad held the Pointers two just two hits in the game but took the loss.
 
After Maddie Sawdey (Medford, WI/Medford) started the bottom of the eighth on second, Jordon Schreiner (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) advanced Sawdey to third on a sacrifice. After a walk, Allen got the job done with a fly ball to center that was deep enough to score Sawdey for the winning run.
 
Miranda Morrison (Madison, WI/East) picked up the win with an eight-inning shutout. The Wildcats managed seven hits off the sophomore, who walked two and struck out four.
 
Morrison got out of a jam in the first inning after St. Kate's had runners on first and third with one out. UW-Stevens Point had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the frame but Flugstad wriggled out of trouble with a pair of strikeouts.
 
Robyn Rohr was 3-for-4 for St. Catherine.

Gustavus (6-4) used a five-run fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead and got a complete game from Jessica Williams on the mound to defeat UW-Stevens Point in the second game of the day.
 
The Gusties got single runs in the first and third innings but pulled away from the Pointers with the big fourth inning. Kailey Morgan led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homerun and Shelby Nosan added a three-run shot off Sydney Gorges (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville).
 
UW-Stevens Point got on the board with two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by Sam Raddant (Shawano, WI/Shawano), scoring Alison Kuhne (New Berlin, WI/West ) and Bailie Sheahan (Salem, WI/Wilmot Union).
 
Williams held the Pointers to four hits, three of which came in the final frame, in seven innings.
 
Bre Ellison threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief of Gorges for UW-Stevens Point.
 
The Pointers have a week and a half off until they head to Florida, where they will play 10 games, beginning with a game against Bowdoin on Thursday, March 12 at 11 a.m. EST.
