MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. –
Sydney Conley (South St. Paul, MN/South St. Paul) made a career-high 36 saves but Becca Zarembinski scored the only goal of the game to give No. 7/9 St. Thomas a 1-0 win over the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team on Saturday evening at St. Thomas Ice Arena.
Box Score Zarembinski scored her fourth goal of the season for St. Thomas (8-1-1) from Leah Schwartzman at 11:09 of the second period and that was all the Tommies would need. UST goaltender Mackenzie Torpy turned aside all 21 UW-Stevens Point (6-5-2) for her fourth shutout of the season.
Trailing 1-0 with time winding down UW-Stevens Point got a power-play opportunity with 1:35 to go and pulled Conley to set up an extended 6-on-4. The Pointers got two shots, including a close-range shot by
Cara Lemirande (Janesville, WI/Craig), but was unable to get either past Torpy.
St. Thomas held a 37-21 advantage in shots on goal in the game but Conley kept the Pointers close as her 36 saves were five more than her previous career-high 31.
Emily Lester (Eau Claire, WI/Memorial) and Lemirande each had four shots for UW-Stevens Point, while
Meredith Ingbretson (Hayward, WI/Hayward) added three. Neither team was able to capitalize on the power play in the game, as the teams went a combined 0-for-7 with the extra skater.
The one-goal loss means 10 of UW-Stevens Point's 13 games this season have been decided by a goal or ended in a tie and the Pointers are 6-2-2 in those games.
The Pointers and Tommies complete their weekend series on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. back at St. Thomas Ice Arena.
