ASHLAND, Wis. –
Jono Davis (La Verne, CA) scored a natural hat trick in the span of 7:59 in the second period to help the No. 7/8 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team pull away from Northland in a 6-1 win on Friday night at Bay Area Civic Center.
Box Score Davis scored three consecutive UW-Stevens Point (8-3-1) goals to break the game open, including two in the final 1:07 of the period, after Northland (2-9-0) got on the board to trail 3-1. Davis' hat trick marked the second consecutive game in which a UWSP player has recorded a hat trick after
Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) did so in a 5-3 win over UW-Superior last Saturday.
The win improved UW-Stevens Point to 4-0-0 all-time against Northland with three of the wins coming in Ashland. The Pointers have outscored the Lumberjacks 29-2 in the four games.
After Darius Cole scored Northland's lone goal of the evening with 1:33 remaining in the second period, Davis scored his second of the night from
Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison) 26 seconds later with 1:07 on the clock. The junior then completed his hat trick with 21 seconds left in the period to cap the game's scoring.
Davis now has scored all four of his goals this season in the last two games. His natural hat trick was the first by a UW-Stevens Point player since Russel Law scored three consecutive UWSP goals in a 3-3 tie at St. Scholastica on Jan. 27, 2006.
Kalisz netted two goals of his own in the first period to give the Pointers an early 2-0 advantage, scoring at 1:59 and 10:44. Kalisz's pair of goals were his eighth and ninth goals of the season to tie Cornellier for the team lead.
Nathan Harris (Fowlerville, MI) scored the Pointers' other goal, finding the back of the net on a delayed five-minute major penalty call at the 9:50 mark of the second period. Harris' second goal of the season was set up by Cornellier, who had two assists in the win. Harris also had a multi-point night with a goal and an assist.
UW-Stevens Point took advantage of its chances on the power play, going 2-for-3 on the night, and also held Northland scoreless on four attempts with the extra skater.
Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI) made 16 saves in his fifth win of the season. Northland's Tyler Ampe made 27 saves in two periods before giving way to AJ Smith, who stopped seven shots in the third. UWSP outshot Northland 40-17 in the game, including 20-4 in the second period.
The Pointers will return to action after the new year, taking on Hamline on Jan. 7 at K.B. Willett Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. in a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament quarterfinal that UWSP won 4-2.
