Final-minute Lemirande goal in OT seals 4-3 win over Bethel

STEVENS POINT, Wis. -  Logan Lemirande (Janesville, WI) scored a power-play goal with just 42 seconds remaining in the overtime period to lift the No. 2 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team over Bethel University 4-3 on Saturday evening at K.B. Willett Arena.

Box Score

In the overtime period, Bethel (0-2-2) was assessed a minor for holding to give UW-Stevens Point (4-0-0) a power-play opportunity and a chance to win the game. Lemirande took advantage as he scored his second goal of the year off a Jono Davis (La Verne, CA) assist with 41.5 seconds left.

In the first period, UW-Stevens Point jumped out to an early two-goal lead after goals from Nick D'Avolio (North Riverside, IL) and Alex Kromm (Penticton, BC) just 44 seconds apart. D'Avolio netted his first goal of the season from an assist by Joey Haydock (Junction City, WI).

Bethel would tie the game up in the second period behind goals from Peter Barral and Justin Bonanno. Bonanno's goal was off assists by Mitch Hughes and Dylan Webster.

In the third period, Stephan Beauvais (Shelby Township, MI) broke the 2-2 tie at 4:06 to give the Pointers the lead. The Royals wouldn't go quietly, however, after Travis Payne scored an even-strength goal at 12:49 to tie the game at 3 apiece, leading to Lemirande's heroics.

Sophomore Jesse Gordichuk (Penticton, BC) recorded his second win on the young season by making 19 saves. Bethel's Jesse Garcia made 36 saves. UWSP outshot the Royals 40-22 in the game.

The Pointers' penalty killing unit went 5-for-5 against the Royals' power-play unit, including warding off a five-minute major penalty late in the first period and early in the second. UW-Stevens Point has not allowed a single goal while playing a man down through the first four games of the season.

UWSP will travel to Minnesota to take on a pair of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) schools in Concordia-Moorhead on Nov. 13 at 8 p.m. and Saint John's University on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
