STEVENS POINT, Wis. – A three-goal third period propelled the No. 10 UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team to a 5-4 victory over Concordia-Moorhead on Friday evening at Ice Hawks Arena.
Box Score UW-Stevens Point (3-0-0) trailed 3-2 entering the third but outscored Concordia-Moorhead (0-1-0) 3-1 in the frame to remain perfect on the young season.
Ali Biagini (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater) and
Shauna Bollinger (Menomonie, WI/Menomonie) each scored a pair of goals in the victory.
The win keeps the Pointers unbeaten (9-0-1) in the all-time series with the Cobbers.
Down a goal,
Maddie Schlossmacher (Roseville, MN/Roseville) scored her first goal of the season at 2:15 of the third period to knot the score at 3-3. Just 36 seconds later, Biagini gave the Pointers a 4-3 lead on her team-best third goal of the season.
Bollinger doubled UW-Stevens Point's advantage midway through the third to make it 5-3 but Concordia-Moorhead hit back with a goal by Ellen Rethwisch with 3:28 remaining to trail by just one. However, the Cobbers were unable to find a tying goal despite pulling their goalie with 1:06 to go.
The teams split a four-goal period two goals apiece with Cassey Petrich and Amber Schaack cancelling out goals by Biagini and Bollinger. Jessica Kongel's goal with 49 seconds remaining in the second period gave the Cobbers the lead going to the third.
UW-Stevens Point outshot Concordia-Moorhead 34-27 in the game, as
Lisa Fowle (Wausau, WI/Wausau West) made 23 saves to pick up her second win of the season. Andrea Klug stopped 29 shots in the loss.
In a game that featured 17 penalties, the Pointers were 3-for-7 on the power play, while the Cobbers were 2-for-6.
The two teams complete their weekend series on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2:30 p.m. at Ice Hawks Arena.
