STEVENS POINT, Wis. –
Erin Crownover (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls) led four players in double figures with 14 points as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team overcame a slow start to defeat Lakeland 68-59 on Tuesday evening at Berg Gym.
Box ScoreCrownover came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points on 6-for-8 from the field for UW-Stevens Point (3-1), which scored 60 points over the final three quarters. Lakeland (0-4) got 14 points and nine rebounds from Bailey Grayvold in the loss.
UW-Stevens Point led 35-31 midway through the third quarter before using a 6-0 run in a little over a minute to take the first double-digit lead of the game. Lakeland hung around to trail by just five entering the fourth quarter after Grayvold closed the third quarter with a layup.
A three-pointer by Kayla Clark to start the fourth brought the Muskies within two points but the Pointers then used a 9-3 run to extend the lead to eight, following a
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) three-pointer with 7:18 remaining. UW-Stevens Point would lead by at least six the rest of the way.
Crownover was joined in double figures by
Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna), Anklam and
Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township). Hennes scored nine of her 12 points in the second half, Anklam had six of her 10 after the break and Miceli finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards. Miceli was 8-for-12 from the free-throw line on the night.
UW-Stevens Point shot 41.5 percent (22-for-53) in the game, including 44.4 percent (12-for-27) after halftime. The Pointers held a 43-31 edge on the glass thanks to 21 offensive rebounds, which led to 19 second-chance points. The UW-Stevens Point bench also outscored Lakeland's 29-16 in the win, as 11 UWSP players scored in the game.
The Muskies shot 34.6 percent (18-for-52) from the field in the loss. Lakeland was 16-for-17 (94.1 percent) from the charity stripe, compared to 19-for-33 (57.6 percent) for UWSP. Clark, Maddy Doll and Lexie Greenheck each had nine points in the game for Lakeland.
After UW-Stevens Point scored the first five points of the game, Lakeland held the Pointers to just three points in the rest of the first quarter to lead 11-8 after 10 minutes of play. Neither team led by more than five points at any point in the opening half. UW-Stevens Point shot 3-for-13 (23.1 percent) from the field in the first quarter but improved to 7-for-13 (53.8 percent) in the second quarter.
