CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago held the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team to 25.5 percent shooting as the Maroons defeated the Pointers 63-40 in the UChicago/WashU Classic on Saturday evening at Ratner Center.
Box ScoreElizabeth Nye and Britta Nordstrom combined for 38 points on 16-for-20 shooting for Chicago (3-0), which shot 51.0 percent from the field.
Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) led UW-Stevens Point (2-1) with eight points and 12 rebounds.
After leading 28-20 at halftime, the Maroons took a double-digit lead by scoring the first two baskets of the third quarter. The Chicago lead stood at 10 points late in the third quarter until the Maroons scored the final seven points of the frame to take a 46-29 lead into the fourth.
Nye shot 8-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-5 from behind the arc, on her way to a game-high 21 points, while Nordstrom was 8-for-9 from the floor as part of a 17-point, six-rebound, five-assist night. Olariche Obi added 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Eleven players scored in the game for UW-Stevens Point, although none reached double figures. The Pointers forced 23 turnovers in the game, including 14 steals, led by five steals from
Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London). The Maroons outscored the Pointers 40-20 in the paint in the game.
In the first quarter, Chicago opened up a 14-7 lead with 2:19 remaining before UW-Stevens Point went on a 6-0 run to get within a single point after four-straight made free throws and a transition layup by
Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London). However, the Maroons closed the quarter with a three-pointer by Katrina Williams and led the rest of the way.
UW-Stevens Point returns home to Berg Gym to face Lakeland on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 5:30 p.m.
