Hennes leads women's basketball to season-opening win over Finlandia

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) scored a career-high 22 points on her return to the court and the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team posted its highest point total in over three years in a 92-45 season-opening win over Finlandia on Saturday afternoon at Berg Gym.

Hennes shot 9-for-10 from the field, including 3-for-4 from behind the arc, on the way to her 22 points for UW-Stevens Point (1-0). The 92 points were the Pointers' most since a 95-49 win over UW-Superior on Jan. 29, 2011. With the win, UWSP improves to 5-0 all-time against Finlandia (0-1).
 
After trailing 7-6 with 6:39 left in the first quarter, UW-Stevens Point went on a 17-0 run to take a 23-7 lead. The Pointers held the Lions scoreless for 5:50 seconds and Sarah Gamillo (Colby, WI/Colby) scored six of her nine first-quarter points during the run to give UWSP a 26-10 lead after the first 10 minutes.
 
Hennes scored UW-Stevens Point's first eight points of the second quarter as the Pointers stretched their lead to 34-12 in the opening two minutes of the period. UW-Stevens Point took a 51-24 lead into the halftime break after making 7-of-10 threes in the first half.
 
In the second half, UW-Stevens Point never led by less than 25 points and led by as many as the final margin of 47. The Pointers shot 53.1 percent (34-for-64) from the field in the game and held the Lions to 33.3 percent (17-for-51).
 
The Pointers held a 46-22 advantage in bench points, led by Gamillo's 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting. Fourteen players scored in the game for UW-Stevens Point, which scored 32 points off 26 Finlandia turnovers. The Pointers committed just 12 turnovers in the game, which led to just two points for the Lions.
 
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) added 11 points, six assists and two steals in the win. Anklam made two of her three three-pointers in the first quarter, as the Pointers went 7-for-10 from behind the arc in the frame.
 
Karrah Bakker led Finlandia with 10 points on 5-for-11 shooting, while Caitlin Fraser added nine on 3-for-11 from behind the arc.
 
UW-Stevens Point takes on No. 9 Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. in Chicago, Ill.
