Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Grauer scores twice, including game-winner, as men's hockey stays perfect

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Eliot Grauer (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) scored two goals to lead the second-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team to its sixth-straight win by defeating Saint John's 3-2 on Saturday evening at the National Hockey Center.

Box Score

With 8:02 remaining in the third period, Grauer picked up the puck in the neutral zone and put a backhand shot past Saint John's (0-4-2) goaltender Saxton Soley to give UW-Stevens Point (6-0-0) a 3-2 lead. Grauer's game-winner was his second goal of the night and was his third goal in the two games.

Halfway through the first period, the Johnnies jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Garrett Riebling tucked one over the blocker of Jesse Gordichuk (Penticton, BC).

With just over five minutes to play in the first period, Grauer would net UWSP's 10th power-play goal of the season to tie the game. Grauer's goal was his second power-play goal of the weekend. Just 44 seconds later, forward Zach Badalamenti (Harrison Township, MI) would score his first-career goal to give the Pointers a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

Through two periods of play, UWSP outshot the Johnnies 23-16 but both teams came up empty in the second period. The Pointers held a 2-1 going into the final period.

Saint John's wouldn't go quietly, as Sean Lang would tie the game up just 1:08 into the third period before Grauer's game-winning goal.

With another power-play goal tonight, the Pointers' extra man unit has gone 10-for-30 (.333) on the man advantage, which ranks fourth in the nation. UWSP has scored a power-play goal in five out of six games so far this season.

Gordichuk earned his third victory of the season by recording 28 saves. Soley made 29 saves for the Johnnies.

The Pointers will return home to K.B. Willett Arena to take on two NCHA opponents. On Friday night, UWSP will take on Marian for the annual Teddy Bear Toss, and on Saturday, the Pointers will take on St. Norbert in a matchup of top-10 teams. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. for both contests.
