APPLETON, Wis. - The No. 2-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team went 4-for-6 on the power play and got goals from seven different players in a 9-1 win at Lawrence on Saturday evening at Appleton Ice Center.
Box ScoreAfter scoring seven goals in its opener the night before, UW-Stevens Point (2-0-0) picked up where they left off, bringing their season total to 16 goals in two games. After Lawrence (0-2-0) got within a goal at 2-1, the Pointers scored the game's final six goals to cruise to the win.
UW-Stevens Point has now scored at least 15 goals in its first two games of the season for three consecutive seasons. The Pointers scored 15 goals in their first two games last season and 17 in their first two games in 2013-14.
For the second night in a row,
Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison) opened the scoring early, scoring at 2:28 of the first. After
Logan Lemirande (Janesville, WI) made it 2-0 at 11:07, Lawrence's Josh Koepplinger got the Vikings within one at 15:20.
However, the Pointers hit right back with goals from
Eliot Grauer (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) and
Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) late in the period to go up 4-1 heading into the first intermission. Cornellier and Kalisz are tied for the team lead with three goals through two games.
Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) scored a pair of power-play goals in the second period, giving UWSP power play goals numbers three and four of the night. The Pointers added goals from
Evan Dixon (Novi, MI), Kalisz and
Drew Graves (Allen Park, MI/Allen Park ) to cap the scoring.
Kalisz finished with a game-high three points on two goals and an assist and Sharkey also notched two goals. Lemirande and Grauer each had a goal and an assist, while defensemen
Trace Strahle (Anchorage, AK/Robert Service) and
Nathan Harris (Fowlerville, MI) each tallied a pair of assists. Eleven UWSP players had at least one point in the game.
Freshmen
Jesse Gordichuk (Penticton, BC) won the first game of his collegiate career, allowing one goal and making 28 saves. Fourteen of Gordichuk's 28 saves came in the second period.
UW-Stevens Point takes to its home ice for the first time this season on Friday, Nov. 6 against Gustavus Adolphus at K.B. Willett Arena at 7 p.m. on Parents Weekend.
