Pair of third-period goals power No. 10 Pointers past Oles in season opener

STEVENS POINT, Wis.  – Two goals in the third period led the No. 10 UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team to a 2-1 win over St. Olaf in its season and home opener on Friday evening at Ice Hawks Arena.

UW-Stevens Point opens the season 1-0 with the win, while St. Olaf moves to 0-1 on the season. The Pointers are 9-0-1 in home openers under Ann Ninnemann and 23-2-2 all-time against the Oles.
 
Despite being short-handed, Pointers' senior Hailey Rock (Hammond, WI/Central) skated past her defender and found the back of the net at the 8:53 minute mark of the third period, scoring her first goal of the season. Rock's goal was assisted by Kat Nejedlo (Fond du Lac, WI/Fond du Lac).
 
At the 17:06 minute mark, Meredith Ingbretson (Hayward, WI/Hayward) added an insurance goal, assisted by Ellie Punnett (Hailey, ID/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) and Nejedlo, increasing their lead 2-0.
 
St. Olaf cut the lead in half after a power-play goal at the 19:20 minute, scored by Riley Anderson, assisted by Xandi Swedberg and Sara Lind.
 
The Oles added pressure on the Pointers with the extra attacker in the last two minutes of the game but UW-Stevens Point prevailed and held off the last push.
 
Lisa Fowle (Wausau, WI/Wausau West) earned her first win of the season, saving 29 of 30 shots in the first start of her UWSP career.
 
UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 31 to cap off the two-game series against St. Olaf at Ice Hawks Arena. The puck is set to drop at 2:30 p.m. Kids will have the chance to Trick or Treat with the Pointers following the game.
