Second-ranked men's hockey uses big second period to win opener 7-3

GENEVA, Ill- After a breakout second period, the second-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team defeated second-year NCAA program Aurora 7-3 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

UW-Stevens Point (1-0-0) scored four of its seven goals in the second period to give the Pointers their first win of the season. UWSP outshot Aurora (0-1-0) by a 64-25 margin. The 64 shots were the most by the Pointers in a game since they had 71 in 10-0 victory over Northland College on Oct. 25, 2008, a string of 197 games.
 
Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison) opened the 2015-16 season by scoring off an Alex Brooks (Grand Rapids, MI) assist just 57 seconds into the opening frame. Kalisz led the team with 10 shots. The Spartans would get the goal back at the 17:59 mark of the first off a goal by Michael Mikulan.
 
The Pointers broke the tie by finding the back of the net four times in second period, including a pair of goals by Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem). Tim Santopoalo's second period goal cut the Pointers' lead to three, 4-1.
 
Newcomers Ethan Strong (Kinmount, ON) and Joey Haydock (Junction City, WI) added goals of their own in the third period to secure the UWSP victory. The win was Pointers' fourth-straight victory in their season opener.
 
Ten UWSP players recorded points, led by Kalisz, Cornellier, Alex Kromm (Penticton, BC), Nathan Harris (Fowlerville, MI), Eliot Grauer (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) and Logan Lemirande (Janesville, WI), who each had two-point nights.
 
Sophomore goaltender Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI) recorded 22 stops in his first-career win. Aurora goaltender Jared Rutledge recorded a career-high 57 saves.
 
The Pointers will return to action Saturday night (Oct. 31) as they take on Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
