MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – A goal by
Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison) with 1:46 remaining in the third period sent the fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey to its sixth win in a row with a 2-1 non-conference win over Augsburg on Friday night at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Box Score Kalisz, the reigning Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men's Ice Hockey Athlete of the Week, beat Augsburg (6-6) goaltender Fredrik Melander on the short side from the right wing for the game-winning goal at 18:14 of the final period for UW-Stevens Point (11-2).
The goal was Kalisz's 10th of the season, the second-best total in the WIAC, and was assisted by
Nick D'Avolio (North Riverside, IL) and
Drew Graves (Allen Park, MI/Allen Park ). It was also the junior's third game-winning goal of the season and his fifth goal in the last four games.
After a scoreless first period, the Auggies scored the game's first goal on a power-play goal by Lucas Hendrickson at 13:17 of the second period.
Two and a half minutes later,
Logan Lemirande (Janesville, WI) scored his second goal in as many games for UWSP to level the game at 1-1. Lemirande's goal was assisted by
Garrett Ladd (Fenton, MI/Fenton) and
Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) at 15:45 of the second period.
UW-Stevens Point held a 46-26 advantage in shots in the game, led by seven shots off the stick of Kalisz. The Pointers nearly added two more goals but
Kevin Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI/North) and
Mark Bittner (Crookston, MN/Crookston) each hit the post.
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) made 25 saves to earn the win, while Melander took the loss despite a 44-save performance.
UW-Stevens Point faces Hamline on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
