STEVENS POINT, Wis. –
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) shot her way to a career-high 24 points and the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team held UW-Eau Claire to 24.1 percent from the field in a 56-43 victory over the Blugolds on Saturday evening at Berg Gym.
Box Score Anklam's shot 6-for-13 from the field, including 5-of-9 from behind the arc, and made 7-of-8 free throws and was the only double-digit scorer for UW-Stevens Point (10-10, 5-6 WIAC). The sophomore recorded the first 20-plus point performance of her UWSP career and the five threes were also the most of her career.
The Pointers' defense clamped down on the UW-Eau Claire (11-8, 6-4 WIAC) offense, holding the Blugolds nearly 20 points under their season average. UWSP has held its last four opponents to an average of 48.8 points a game. The win completed the Pointers' season sweep of UWEC.
UW-Eau Claire led 32-26 with 12:48 remaining before UW-Stevens Point went on a 12-0 run to take a six-point lead of its own.
Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) jump-started the run with a three-pointer and Anklam added one of her five on the game, while the Pointers' defense forced four turnovers.
UWEC hung around, trailing by five with 5:53 left but Anklam capped a 5-0 spurt with a driving layup to give UWSP a double-digit lead with 2:57 on the clock. The Pointers closed out the game at the free-throw line and made 20-of-23 (87.0 percent) in the game.
UW-Stevens Point led for over 14 minutes in the first half, including an early 14-7 lead. UW-Eau Claire later led 17-16 after a 10-2 run but UWSP took a 21-20 lead into the break.
UW-Stevens Point's bench provided a lift, outscoring UW-Eau Claire's reserves 25-3 in the game, including 17-3 in the second half. Roland and
Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) had nine each off the bench, while
Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) provided five points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Pointers shot 15-for-48 (31.3 percent) from the field in the game. However, UWSP matched its season-high with six three-pointers and capitalized on its trips to the charity stripe.
Both teams committed 20 turnovers in the game and UW-Stevens Point outscored UW-Eau Claire 22-14 off turnovers. Teenie Lichtfuss led the Blugolds with 15 points, while Ellen Blacklock added nine points and had six of UWEC's 10 blocks.
UW-Stevens Point plays at UW-River Falls on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.
