Women's basketball stumbles in loss to Eagles

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Visiting UW-La Crosse held the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team to a season-low 23.2 percent shooting as the Pointers fell 51-41 to the Eagles on Wednesday night at Berg Gym.

UW-La Crosse (8-11, 3-7 WIAC) used a 10-2 run that began with 5:30 remaining to turn a three-point lead into a 48-37 advantage with 1:35 to go. The Eagles limited UW-Stevens Point (9-10, 4-6 WIAC) to six field goals in the second half on 20.0 percent shooting.

After trailing by 11 early in the second half, the Pointers gradually came back to get within 38-35 with 5:30 to play in regulation. Elise DeNoyer and Rachel Atchison hit back-to-back three-pointers to end the run and give the Eagles an 11-point lead.

UW-La Crosse started the second half with a 9-0 run to lead by 11 in the first 2:30 of the half. UW-Stevens Point started the half by missing its first four shots, while the visitors made their first three.

The Pointers crept to within five with 9:05 to play after trailing by 11, as Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) hit a pair of layups in the span of 1:17. The Eagles committed four consecutive turnovers during the stretch.

UW-Stevens Point got off to a 17-11 lead with 5:45 until halftime after a three by Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest). However, UW-La Crosse responded with a 7-0 run to take its first lead since 4-2 on four free throws and a three-pointer by Kara Selk.

Atchison led the Eagles with a game-high 14 points, while MaKenzie Miller added 13. The pair combined for nine of UWL's 13 made field goals in the game, as the visitors shot 34.2 percent in the game.

Anklam and Kaitlyn Jacobs (New Franken, WI/Green Bay Preble) scored 11 points each for the Pointers, while Miceli grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and scored six points. The teams combined for 29 turnovers with UW-La Crosse scoring 13 points off turnovers in the second half.

The Eagles doubled up the Pointers from the free-throw line, making 22-of-33 attempts (66.7 percent), compared to 11-of-16 (68.6 percent). The teams combined for 45 fouls in the contest.

UW-Stevens Point hosts UW-Eau Claire on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 4 p.m. at Berg Gym.
