Each of the previous three games between UW-Stevens Point (12-6-2, 3-3-2 WIAC) and UW-River Falls (14-3-1, 6-1-1 WIAC) were decided by 3-2 scores. The Pointers came back from 1-0 down in the first minute to take a 2-1 lead after a period, only for the Falcons to tie the game early in the second period.

For the second game in a row, UWRF scored in the opening minute of the game on Sam Greeley's unassisted goal. However, UWSP hit back with goals from Betsy Anderson (Farmington, MN/Farmington) and Emily Lester (Eau Claire, WI/Memorial).
Anderson scored her third goal of the season unassisted on the power play at 5:22 of the first period. The goal was the junior's second in the last three games.

Under five minutes later, Lester scored her fifth goal in the last five games off assists by Meredith Ingbretson (Hayward, WI/Hayward) and Kat Nejedlo (Fond du Lac, WI/Fond du Lac). Lester's goal was her 12th of the season, while Ingbretson picked up her 10th point in the last 10 games.

Like the first period, UW-River Falls scored 56 seconds into the second period, as Brianna Breiland found the back of the net on the power play. The Falcons outshot the Pointers 34-14 in the game, including 3-0 in the five-minute overtime.

Janna Beilke-Skoug (Madison, WI/East) made 32 saves in the game for UW-Stevens Point, while UW-River Falls' Angie Hall made 12 stops, seven of which came in the third period.

The Pointers were 1-for-2 on the power play and the Falcons were 1-for-5. UWSP held UWRF off the scoreboard on a five-minute major penalty in the second period.
