Power-play goals in third lead Pointers to 4-2 win over Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) and Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison) scored power-play goals in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and send the No. 6 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team to a 4-2 victory over UW-Superior in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) on Friday night at Wessman Arena.

After the teams split the first four goals of the game, Sharkey and Kalisz helped UW-Stevens Point (13-4-0, 4-1-0 WIAC) capitalize on a five-minute major and a game misconduct by UW-Superior (7-11-0, 0-5-0 WIAC). The Pointers entered the game converting on 18.5 percent of its' power-play chances but scored twice with the extra skater to seal the win.
 
A minute and 34 seconds into the third, UWSP went on the extended power play and Sharkey scored the eventual game-winning goal at 3:39 after being set up by Alex Brooks (Grand Rapids, MI) and Eliot Grauer (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak), who tallied two assists on the night. Sharkey's goal was his seventh of the season, the second-most on the team, and his first since scoring in five games in a row from Nov. 15 – Dec. 5.
 
Just 1:19 later, Kalisz gave the Pointers a two-goal advantage with his team-best 12th goal of the season. The junior's goal was assisted by Andrew Kolb (Toledo, OH/Toledo Catholic) and Kalisz's 12 goals are the second-most on the WIAC.
 
UW-Superior held a 1-0 lead after the opening period on a goal by Ian Ecklund but UW-Stevens Point responded by scoring the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead. Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) lit the lamp for the second time this season from Grauer and Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) at 3:52 of the second period before Cornellier scored shorthanded at 14:46 from Kevin Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI/North).
 
The Yellowjackets made it 2-2 before the second period was over, as James Hughes scored with 1:02 remaining in the period before the Pointers' strong third period.
 
UWSP held a 34-27 advantage in shots in the game, including 13-7 in the final period. Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) improved to 13-3-0 on the season by making 25 saves. Bryce Fink was saddled with the loss despite making 30 saves for UWS.
 
The two teams take to the ice at Wessman Arena to close out the weekend series at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24.
