Men's hockey wins 13-goal shootout at UW-Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Seven players scored for the No. 9-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team, as the Pointers scored six of the final seven goals of the game to claim a weekend sweep with a 9-4 victory over UW-Superior on Saturday evening at Wessman Arena.

The teams were deadlocked at 3-3 early in the second period but UW-Stevens Point (14-4-0, 5-1-0 WIAC) scored the next three goals of the game to pull away from UW-Superior (7-12-0, 0-6-0 WIAC). The Pointers also scored the game's last three goals after the Yellowjackets got within 6-4.

With the score tied at 3-3, Alex Brooks (Grand Rapids, MI) scored on the power play at 7:06 of the second period to give the Pointers a lead they would not relinquish. Before the period was over, UWSP stretched its lead to 6-3 on goals by Evan Dixon (Novi, MI) and Trace Strahle (Anchorage, AK/Robert Service).

UW-Superior's Eric Shand completed his hat trick on the night with a power-play goal 1:31 into the third period to make it 6-4. However, the Pointers came back with a power-play goal from Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas), his second of the night, 2:11 later, before Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) scored the game's final two goals to record his first career two-goal game.

Eliot Grauer (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) scored the first of the game's 13 goals unassisted just 10 seconds into the contest, equaling the school record for the fastest goal to start a game. Matt Interbartolo (Jan. 29, 1999) and Bill Horbach (Feb. 15, 1992) also scored goals at 0:10 of the first period.

After Andrew Kolb (Toledo, OH/Toledo Catholic) doubled UWSP's lead midway through the first period, UW-Superior's Cody Hotchkin made it 2-1 after a period with an unassisted goal. Sharkey scored his first goal of the game just 14 seconds into the second period. The Yellowjackets proceeded to knot the game at 3-3 on Shand's first two goals of the night.

Six UW-Stevens Point players tallied multi-point nights, led by Alex Brooks (Grand Rapids, MI)' career-best four points. Kevin Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI/North) recorded three assists, while Sharkey also registered there points on two goals and one assist.

Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) made 31 saves, including 16 in the decisive second period, to pick up the win. Zach Thompson took the loss while making 27 saves for UWS. UW-Stevens Point held a slender 36-35 advantage in shots with 17 of UW-Superior's 35 coming on the power play.

Both teams scored three power-play goals in the game, which included 18 penalties. The Pointers were 3-for-5 with the extra skater, while the Yellowjackets were 3-for-11.
