STEVENS POINT, Wis. –
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) scored a career-high 19 points and
Kaitlyn Jacobs (New Franken, WI/Green Bay Preble) registered her fourth double-double of the season to propel the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team to a 67-48 win over Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foe UW-Whitewater on Wednesday night at Berg Gym.
Box ScoreAnklam shot 5-for-7 from the field and 7-for-7 from the free-throw line on her way to break her previous career-high of 14 points for her fourth-straight double-digit scoring performance for UW-Stevens Point (9-8, 4-4 WIAC). Jacobs was one point shy of her career-high with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
UWSP outscored UW-Whitewater (8-9, 3-5 WIAC) by 22 from the free-throw line, making 27-of-34 (79.4 percent) at the charity stripe. The 27 made free throws is the most the Pointers have made since the 2012-13 team was 31-of-40 in an overtime win over UW-Superior at home on Jan. 26, 2013.
UW-Whitewater made its first six shots from the field on its way to a 16-4 lead four and a half minutes into the game but UW-Stevens Point outscored the visitors 28-9 the rest of the half to take a 32-25 lead at the half. The Pointers held the Warhawks to 4-of-20 shooting after UWW made its first six shots.
The Warhawks led 20-12 with 8:34 to go before halftime before a 12-2 run gave UWSP its first lead of the game with 4:13 remaining. UWW retook the lead on a three by Abbie Reeves but the Pointers answered back with a layup by
Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) and led the rest of the game.
After UW-Whitewater's Lisa Palmer opened the second half with a layup, Anklam scored five quick points as part of a 10-0 run that gave UW-Stevens Point its first double-digit lead of the game. The Warhawks twice got within eight in the second half but the Pointers pulled away midway through the half with a 7-0 run to turn a nine-point lead into a 16-point advantage.
Anklam scored 12 of her 19 points in the second half and also added four rebounds and matched her career-high with four assists. Jacobs had 10 of her 17 after the break, pulled down seven of her 13 rebounds on the offensive end and also contributed three blocks and two steals.
UW-Stevens Point outrebounded UW-Whitewater 39-28 in the game, including a 23-12 advantage in the glass in the second half. UWSP scored a season-best 10 fastbreak points and shot 42.2 percent in the game, while UWW shot 34.5 percent.
Reeves led the Warhawks with 14 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Reeves was 4-for-6 from behind the arc in the game. Palmer was the only other player in double figures for UW-Whitewater, finishing with 10 points and five rebounds.
UW-Stevens Point travels to No. 24 UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, Jan. 24 for a 3 p.m. game. The Pointers topped the then-No. 11-ranked Titans 54-47 at Berg Gym on Jan. 10.
