Men's hockey downed by Falcons 4-2

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Visiting No. 4/7 UW-River Falls broke a 1-1 tie with three unanswered goals to defeat the No. 5/7 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team 4-2 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Saturday night at K.B. Willett Arena.

Kyle Gattelaro scored two of the three unanswered goals for UW-River Falls (14-2-1, 3-1-0 WIAC), as the Falcons salvaged a weekend split. Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) and Scott Henegar (Trenton, MI/Trenton) each scored for UW-Stevens Point (12-4-0, 3-1-0 WIAC).
 
Gattelaro scored his first goal of the night on the power play at 2:08 of the second period for UWRF. Mitch Kontny made it 3-1 Falcons at the midway point of the period before Gattelaro gave the visitors a three-goal lead 2:42 into the third period.
 
Henegar got one back for UW-Stevens Point on the power play at 6:01 of the third period off assists by Garrett Ladd (Fenton, MI/Fenton) and Alex Brooks (Grand Rapids, MI). The goal was the senior's sixth of the season, tying him for second on the team.

Trailing by two goals, the Pointers had two power-play opportunities but were unable to find a third goal.
 
UWRF opened the scoring eight and a half minutes into the game on a goal by Ryan Doner but UWSP answered late in the period when Mark Bittner (Crookston, MN/Crookston) and Alex Kromm (Penticton, BC) set up Cornellier for his fifth goal of the season.
 
UW-Stevens Point held a 23-19 advantage in shots in the game. Tanner Milliron made 21 saves for the Falcons in the win, while Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) took the loss and made 15 saves.
 
The Pointers make the long trip up to Superior on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 23-24 to face the Yellowjackets. Puck drop is at 7:05 p.m. both nights.
