Gamillo, Anklam lead second-half charge in upset of No. 11 UW-Oshkosh

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) and Sarah Gamillo (Colby, WI/Colby) combined for 20 second-half points to lead the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team to a 54-47 win over No. 11 UW-Oshkosh in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Berg Gym.

Box Score

Gamillo scored nine of her career-high 14 points after the half and Anklam had the highest-scoring half of her career, scoring 11 after the break for UW-Stevens Point (8-6, 3-2 WIAC). Anklam also finished with 14 points, matching her career high from Feb. 1, 2014 against UW-Superior.

The duo propelled the Pointers to their second win over a ranked team this season, having defeated No. 22 St. Norbert 71- 59 at home on Dec. 13. Prior to this season, the last UWSP win over a ranked team was on Jan. 26, 2013 when No. 15-ranked UW-Stevens Point topped No. 25 UW-Superior 89-78 at home.

After a low-scoring first 30 minutes, UW-Oshkosh (12-2, 4-1 WIAC) held a 34-30 lead with 10:49 remaining the second half but Gamillo and Anklam spearheaded a 14-2 UWSP run that gave the Pointers a 44-36 lead with 5:49 to go. Gamillo scored five points during the run and Anklam added a three-point play, as UW-Stevens Point built a lead it would not relinquish.

Trailing by eight, the Titans scored five quick points on a three by Taylor Schmidt and a layup by Eliza Campbell but Gamillo came right back with a layup following her own missed free throw. Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) added three baskets in the final four minutes to end any hope of a UWO comeback.

UW-Stevens Point held UW-Oshkosh to a season-low 47 points on 28.1 percent shooting in the game. The Titans shot just 6-for-26 (23.1 percent) in the second half and 2-for-14 (14.3 percent) from behind the arc in the game.

Meanwhile, the Pointers shot 15-for-24 (62.5 percent) in the second half to finish at 42.6 percent. UWSP outscored UWO 18-10 in points off turnovers and 30-14 in bench points, thanks to 24 combined points from Gamillo and Miceli.

Anklam shot 5-for-10 from the field, 2-for-5 from three-point range and 2-for-3 from the free-throw line in the game, while Gamillo was 6-for-9 from the field and made both of her attempts from behind the arc. Miceli added 10 points and nine rebounds on 4-for-6 shooting.

UW-Oshkosh trailed for 12:40 in the opening half but took a 23-20 lead into the locker room thanks to a 9-0 run to close the half. The Titans held the Pointers scoreless for the final 6:58 of the half and Katelyn Kuehl had back-to-back layups during the stretch.

Marissa Selner led UWO with 12 points and six rebounds before fouling out in the closing seconds. Selner was 4-for-8 from the field and 4-for-6 from the free-throw line. Eliza Campbell added nine points on 4-for-9 shooting off the bench.
