Larson accounts for four touchdowns, Pointers football wins opener

Box Score STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Kyle Larson (Clayton, WI/Clayton) accounted for four touchdowns in his debut as the UW-Stevens Point football team won its season opener 42-31 against Albion on Saturday evening at Community Stadium at Goerke Park.

Larson completed 25-of-36 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score in his first game for UW-Stevens Point (1-0). His counterpart Dominic Bona also tossed three touchdowns and ran for a fourth for Albion (0-1).

The Pointers trailed 17-7 midway through the second quarter but scored touchdowns on six straight drives to lead 42-24 early in the fourth quarter. UW-Stevens Point narrowly outgained Albion 454-453 in the game but the UWSP defense intercepted Bona three times, including one by Dan Brown (Pewaukee, WI/Pewaukee) that set up the game-winning touchdown.

With Albion leading 24-21 midway through the third quarter, UW-Stevens Point took command with two touchdowns in a span of 79 seconds. Larson hit Matt Sosinsky (Princeton, WI/Princeton) from 12 yards out with 3:49 left in the third quarter to put the Pointers ahead 28-24. Sosinsky finished with 10 catches for 119 yards and a score.

Just over a minute later, Larson scored on a one-yard sneak to make it 35-24. Larson's score came following Brown's interception on a swing pass that gave the Pointers the ball deep in Britons' territory.

Early in the fourth quarter, Larson connected with Jameson Brock (Milwaukee, WI/Wauwatosa West) for a 20-yard touchdown over the middle to give UW-Stevens Point breathing room at 42-24. The Britons scored with just under three minutes remaining on a 33-yard screen pass from Bona to Zach Brigham, who finished with 15 catches for 117 yards.

Albion led 17-7 halfway through the second quarter after a scoring pass from Bona to Cody Crawford. The Pointers responded when Jake Menzel (Oostburg, WI/Oostburg) capped an 18-play, 86-yard drive with a two-yard run.

At the 9:37 mark of the third quarter, De'Juan Wright gave UW-Stevens Point its first lead of the game with a nine-yard touchdown run. Wright finished with 13 carries for 90 yards in the game. Albion's Mike Czarnecki ran 20 times for 159 yards, 114 of which came in the opening half.

The Pointers converted 10-of-17 third downs, helping them control the ball for 36:19 in the game. Both teams were successful on both of their fourth down conversions.

Danny Wall (Milwaukee, WI/West Allis Hale) led the UW-Stevens Point defense with 10.5 total tackles. Mike Longmeyer (Manitowoc, WI/Lincoln) and Matt Gaffney (Menasha, WI/Menasha) each added interceptions for the Pointers. Collin Ahrens and James Hartley combined for 26.0 total tackles for the Britons.

UW-Stevens Point heads to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to take on Coe on Saturday, Sept. 20 in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
