Box Score STEVENS POINT, Wis. – An early three-goal flurry propelled the fourth-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team to a 6-1 win over visiting third-ranked UW-Eau Claire on Friday night at K.B. Willett Arena on Put a Check to Cancer Night.

Kyle Politz (Apple Valley, MN/Apple Valley), Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) and Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison) all scored in the first 3:43 of the game for the Pointers (17-3-2, 5-3-1 WIAC). UWSP built a 5-0 lead through two periods and sent the Blugolds (16-5-1, 5-3-1 WIAC) to just their second loss in 13 games.
 
Politz got the scoring started 63 seconds into the game, scoring off a rebound from a Scott Henegar (Trenton, MI/Trenton) shot. At the 3:26 mark, Cornellier scored his seventh goal of the season to make it 2-0 and Kalisz scored his first of two goals just 17 seconds later.
 
UW-Stevens Point made it 4-0 at 8:53 of the first period on a power-play goal by Alex Kromm (Penticton, BC/). Kevin Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI/North) earned his second assist of the game on Kromm's goal, giving the defenseman at least one point in nine straight games.
 
Kalisz's second goal of the game came at 8:24 of the second period and was assisted by Ladd and Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas). Ladd and Sharkey each had two assists in the game.
 
Charles Thauwald scored UW-Eau Claire's only goal of the game on the power play at the 6:04 mark of the third period, making the score 5-1. Kyle Heck (Plover, WI/SPASH)'s eighth goal of the season capped the scoring at with just under eight minutes remaining.
 
UWSP outshot UWEC 31-26 in the game, led by Kalisz's six shots. Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) picked up his 15th win of the season by making 25 saves. Jay Deo made 19 saves for the Blugolds after taking over for Tyler Green after the fourth UWSP goal.
 
The two teams meet again on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at K.B. Willett Arena for UW-Stevens Point's Senior Night.
