Pointers second-half rally falls short at UW-Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team shot 50.0 percent in the second half but host UW-Superior held on for a 58-50 win over the Pointers in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

After trailing 25-10 at the half, UW-Stevens Point (4-4, 1-1 WIAC) outscored UW-Superior (4-3, 2-0 WIAC) 40-33 in the second half thanks to making 15-of-30 shots from the field. Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) led UWSP with 16 points, one short of the career-high 17 she scored against the Yellowjackets on Jan. 11, 2014.
 
UW-Superior led 42-23 with 10:00 left in the game before the Pointers scored eight-straight points to cut the deficit to 12 with 6:55 remaining. Later, a three-pointer by Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) brought UWSP to within 10, 50-40, with 4:06 to play but UW-Superior maintained at least seven-point advantage the rest of the way.
 
In the opening half, the teams were tied at 10-10 with 7:08 to go but the Yellowjackets held the Pointers scoreless until the break as part of a 15-0 run. Sally Linzmeier scored eight of the 15 UWS points during the run and finished with 22 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
 
In addition to Miceli's 16 points and six rebounds, Roland and Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) each scored nine points for UW-Stevens Point. Kaitlyn Jacobs (New Franken, WI/Green Bay Preble) added seven points and matched her career-high with 11 rebounds, while Taylor Atkinson (Franklin, WI/Franklin/Concordia-St. Paul) handed out a career-high five assists.
 
The Pointers grabbed 17 offensive rebounds in the contest and turned them into 15 points and also outscored the Yellowjackets 22-13 in bench points. UW-Superior shot 37.1 percent in the game and forced 25 turnovers in the victory.
 
After a four-game road swing, UW-Stevens Point returns home to Berg Gym to take on WIAC foe UW-Stout on Wednesday, Dec. 10. The game will also be the team's food drive benefitting The Cupboard.
