St. Olaf hands men's hockey first loss of season

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The second-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team was stymied by 48 saves by St. Olaf's Steve Papciak in a 3-2 loss to the Oles on Saturday night at Northfield Ice Arena.

The senior goaltender made 38 saves over the first two periods on his way to a career-high in that department, as St. Olaf (1-3-0) picked up its first win of the season. The loss was the first of the season for UW-Stevens Point (2-1-0), which outshot St. Olaf 50-33 in the game.
 
The Pointers never led in the game, as the Oles claimed leads of 1-0 and 2-1 prior to Steven Sherman's game-winning, power-play goal at 13:15 of the third period. Sherman's goal came on an extended 5-on-3 and was assisted by Marc Richards and Peter Lindblad.
 
Earlier in the third period, Eliot Grauer (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) had leveled the score at 2-2 with a goal assisted by Mark Bittner (Crookston, MN/Crookston). The goal was Grauer's second of the season and the sophomore tallied a game-high nine shots.
 
Brian Hickey gave St. Olaf a 1-0 lead seven and a half minutes into the game with an unassisted goal. Garrett Ladd (Fenton, MI/Fenton) scored on the power play with a little over three minutes remaining in the opening period, off assists from Kyle Brodie (Denver, CO/Northglenn) and Kevin Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI/North).
 
Mike Erickson's goal midway through the second period gave the Oles their second lead of the game and was assisted by Sherman and Lindblad.
 
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) made 30 saves, including 17 in the second period, for UW-Stevens Point.
 
St. Olaf was 1-for-7 on the power play, while UW-Stevens Point was 1-for-6. Five of UWSP's seven penalties came in the final period.
 
The Pointers look to rebound with a pair of home games next weekend. UW-Stevens Point hosts No. 12 St. Thomas on Friday, Nov. 14 and St. Mary's on Saturday, Nov. 15. Both games start at 7 p.m.
