Kolb's late goal lifts men's hockey over St. Thomas

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Andrew Kolb (Toledo, OH/Toledo Catholic) scored the game-winning goal with 4:52 remaining to lift the sixth-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team to a 3-1 non-conference win over St. Thomas on Friday evening at K.B. Willett Arena.

Box Score

The Pointers (3-1-0) and Tommies (1-2-2) were deadlocked at 1-1 until late in the third period, when Kolb broke the deadlock on the power play. Kolb's goal was his second of the year and was assisted by Garrett Ladd (Fenton, MI/Fenton) and Kyle Brodie (Denver, CO/Northglenn).

UW-Stevens Point ended any hope of a late UST response when Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) scored an unassisted, empty-net goal with 1:09 remaining. The sophomore now has a team-high four goals on just 10 shots this season.

Scott Henegar (Trenton, MI/Trenton) got the Pointers off to a fast start, scoring his second goal of the season just 30 seconds into the game off an assist by Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO). UWSP has scored inside the first minute in each of its two home games this season.

St. Thomas tied the score at 1-1 midway through the period thanks to a power-play goal by Alex Altenbernd, assisted by Michael Krieg.

UW-Stevens Point outshot St. Thomas 33-12 in the game. Drew Fielding made at least nine saves in each period, finishing with 30 for the Tommies. Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) stopped 11 shots for the Pointers.

The Pointers finish the weekend with a game against Saint Mary's on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at K.B. Willett Arena, which will be the team's canned food drive for The Cupboard.
