ST. PETER, Minn. – The second-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team topped Gustavus Adolphus 4-1 behind a pair of goals by
Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) in non-conference action on Friday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
Box Score Cornellier started and capped the scoring for UW-Stevens Point (2-0-0), scoring at 9:53 of the first period and netting an empty-net goal with 59 seconds remaining. Gustavus Adolphus (1-1-0), who sits just outside the top 15 in the USCHO.com poll, outshot the Pointers 33-27 in the game and got a goal from Jake Bushey in the third period.
Scott Henegar (Trenton, MI/Trenton) doubled UW-Stevens Point's lead 1:20 into the second and
Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) made it 3-0 with just under three minutes left in the period.
Alex Brooks (Grand Rapids, MI) assisted Henegar's first goal of the season and
Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison) picked his fifth point of the season by assisting Sharkey's goal.
Bushey pulled one back for the Gusties at 6:18 of the final period but Cornellier's goal ended any threat of a comeback.
The two teams combined for 15 penalties in the game, with UWSP taking eight and Gustavus seven.
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) made 32 saves in the win for UW-Stevens Point, while counterpart Erik Johnson made 23 for Gustavus Adolphus.
The Pointers take on another Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponent on Saturday when they play St. Olaf at 7:30 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
