Scott Henegar (Trenton, MI/Trenton) put UW-Stevens Point in front 1-0 midway through the first, but the U.S. National Under-18 Team scored three unanswered to take a 3-1 lead and went on to get the 5-2 victory in a exhibition matchup Sunday afternoon at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.
Box ScoreHenegar gave the Pointers the lead with his goal on the power play at the 10:30 mark off an assist from
Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas).
With 23 seconds remaining in the first, USA's Troy Terry (Committed to the Univ. of Denver) evened the score with an even strength strike.
1:13 into the second, Auston Matthews gave USA the 2-1 edge. Matthews added his second of the game at the midway point of the second period giving USA the 3-1 lead.
At the 16:33 mark of the second,
Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison) scored, unassisted, cutting the Pointers deficit to one, 3-2.
In the third, USA got two more goals, one each from Matthew Tkachuk and Luke Kunin (Committed to Univ. of Wisconsin) to pull away for the 5-2 victory.
USA held a 38-30 edge on shots on net on the afternoon.
USA goaltender Michael Lackey (Committed to Harvard Univ.) stopped 28 of the Pointers 30 shots on goal while
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) tallied 33 saves on the afternoon.
No. 6 UW-Stevens Point, fresh off a victory over No. 3 Adrian on Saturday, returns to action Dec. 5-6 at home as it opens Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play against UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stout. Friday night, Dec. 6 is the annual Teddy Bear Toss night and Saturday the Pointers will auction an autographed Joe Pavelski jersey.
