ADRIAN, Mich. – Six different players scored as the sixth-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team handed third-ranked Adrian its first loss of the season in a 6-3 decision on Saturday evening at Arrington Ice Arena.
Box Score Ten players recorded at least one point in the victory for UW-Stevens Point (6-2), which repaid Adrian (8-1) for a 6-4 Bulldogs' victory in Stevens Point a week ago.
Scott Henegar (Trenton, MI/Trenton) and
Kevin Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI/North) were the lone UWSP players to tally multiple points in the game, as Gibson recorded a goal and an assist and Henegar added two helpers.
UW-Stevens Point got off to a 2-0 first-period lead on goals 40 seconds apart from Gibson and
Garrett Ladd (Fenton, MI/Fenton). Gibson scored his second goal of the season from
Kyle Brodie (Denver, CO/Northglenn) on the power play at 7:05 before Ladd made it 2-0 at 7:45. Gibson leads the Pointers with 11 points and has recorded at least one point in seven of eight games.
Matthew Thompson, who scored all three of Adrian's goals on the night, got the Bulldogs within one at the end of one period of play with a five-on-three, power-play goal with just under three minutes remaining in the first. Adrian had five chances with the man advantage in the opening period and were 1-for-8 in the game with the extra skater.
Neither team was able to score in the second period until
Alex Brooks (Grand Rapids, MI) picked a good time to score his first goal of the season. Henegar set up Brooks for the goal with 29 seconds remaining in the second to re-establish UWSP's two-goal advantage.
Just 40 seconds into the third period, the Bulldogs trimmed their deficit to just one on Thompson's second of the night. However, the Pointers responded almost immediately via a goal by
Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison) 26 seconds later to take a 4-2 lead.
The score remained 4-2 until an action-packed final two minutes of action. Gibson found
Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) for an empty-net goal with 1:42 remaining to give UW-Stevens Point a three-goal lead.
Thompson then completed his hat trick with seven seconds remaining before Henegar found
Evan Dixon (Novi, MI) for an empty-net goal with just over one second to go.
UW-Stevens Point outshot Adrian 32-27 in the game.
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) made 24 saves, 10 in the first period, in his sixth victory of the season. James Hamby kept out 26 UWSP shots for the Bulldogs but took the loss.
The Pointers are back in action on Sunday, Nov. 30 when they take on the US Under-18 National Team in Adrian, Mich. at 2:30 p.m.
