STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team led by 10 at the break but visiting Illinois Wesleyan shot nearly 63.0 percent in the second half to defeat the Pointers 70-59 on Family Day at Berg Gym on Saturday afternoon.
Box Score Illinois Wesleyan (3-0) outscored UW-Stevens Point (2-2) 46-25 in the second half. The Titans started the final 20 minutes with a 23-2 run spanning nearly nine and a half minutes and led by double digits for the final 10 minutes.
Gabrielle Holness led all scorers with 22 points on 9-for-16 shooting for IWU. Rebekah Ehresman and Molly McGraw each added 11, while Kasey Reaber chipped in with 10. The Titans shot just a shade under 63.0 percent after the break after shooting 38.5 percent in the first half.
UW-Stevens Point led 12-9 at the 13:39 mark of the first half before a quick 6-0 spurt saw the Pointers extend it to nine at 18-9. UWSP's biggest lead of the first 20 minutes was 12 on two occasions.
Nine UWSP players scored in the opening half and the Pointers scored 14 of their 34 points at the free-throw line.
Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) led UW-Stevens Point with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive glass.
Eleni Seitz (Marshfield, WI/Marshfield) and
Kaitlyn Jacobs (New Franken, WI/Green Bay Preble) had seven points each, while
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) and
Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) each had six. The Pointers held an 18-3 advantage in points off the bench before the break.
Illinois Wesleyan outscored UW-Stevens Point 18-2 in points off turnovers and 24-10 in the paint in the second half.
The Pointers travel to Lakeland on Tuesday, Nov. 25 for a 7 p.m. game. Fans who bring three non-perishable food items to the game will receive free admission as part of a food drive for local food pantries.
