Eleven players score to send women's hoops to first win of season

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Eleven players scored, led by 11 points from Joann Wolfenberg (Adell, WI/Plymouth Comprehensive), as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season by topping Ripon 68-42 on day two of the 2014 Pointer Tip-Off Tournament at Berg Gym.

Wolfenberg added eight rebounds to her 11 points in 17 minutes of action for UW-Stevens Point (1-1). The junior was selected to the All-Tournament Team, after averaging 12.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two games.

Kaitlyn Jacobs (New Franken, WI/Green Bay Preble) scored 10 points, Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) had nine and Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) added eight in a balanced offensive attack for the Pointers, who had 36 bench points on the afternoon. UWSP scored 31 points off 25 Ripon turnovers and had 26 second-chance points off 22 offensive rebounds.

UW-Stevens Point used a 10-0 run to build a 20-8 lead midway through the first half. Roland had four points during the run and UWSP scored eight of its 10 points at the free-throw line. The Pointers outscored the Red Hawks 15-2 from the charity stripe in the opening half and 23-8 in the game.

UWSP led 32-21 at the break and scored the first five points of the second half to establish a 15-point advantage. The Pointers did not let Ripon get any closer than 14 points the rest of the way and led by as many as 33 in the second half.

Emma McDonald led Ripon with 13 points and six rebounds. McDonald shot 5-for-6 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc, in the game.

In the championship game of the tournament, Luther defeated Carthage 76-62 behind 22 points each from Meagan Koepnick and Kylie Romeo.

Next up for UW-Stevens Point is a game at Finlandia on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m.
