STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Visiting Luther outscored the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team by eight in the second half, to defeat the Pointers 61-56 in the 2014 Pointer Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Berg Gym.
Box ScoreMeagan Koepnick scored 13 points, Carrie Kilen added 12 and eight rebounds and Moran Lonning chipped in with 10 points, six assists and nine steals for Luther (1-0).
Joann Wolfenberg (Adell, WI/Plymouth Comprehensive) set game-highs with 14 points and nine rebounds, shooting 4-for-5 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line for UW-Stevens Point (0-1).
Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) and
Sarah Gamillo (Colby, WI/Colby) each contributed 11 points in the contest for the Pointers, who shot 41.2 percent from the field, compared to 31.7 percent for the Norse. The Norse forced 30 turnovers and held UWSP to 33.3 percent shooting in the second half.
Luther took its first lead of the second half with 4:17 remaining after a jumper by Lonning and built up a four-point lead with 2:42 left after a Kilen layup. UW-Stevens Point hit right back with a Gamillo three-pointer, to get within one.
The Norse held the Pointers scoreless for the final 1:45 after Gamillo's three and four-of-six free throws in the final 38 seconds.
Luther led early 7-4 but UW-Stevens Point responded with a 15-2 run to take a 19-9 lead at the 9:14 mark of the opening half. Wolfenberg had six points during the run and
Kaitlyn Jacobs (New Franken, WI/Green Bay Preble) capped the stretch with back-to-back layups.
The Pointers led by as many as 12 in the first half before a late Luther run got the Norse within three at halftime at 32-29. Nine UWSP players and 10 Luther players scored in the game.
On day two of the Pointer Tip-Off Tournament, UW-Stevens Point will play Ripon at 1 p.m. before Luther and Carthage face-off at 3 p.m. at Berg Gym. Carthage had four players in double figures in a
70-49 win over Ripon in Saturday's other game.
