Sharkey's overtime winner gives Pointers win over Saint Mary's

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) netted the game-winner on Saturday evening, scoring 46 seconds into overtime to lead the second-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Saint Mary's University at K.B. Willett Arena.

Box Score

The visiting Cardinals got on the board first, scoring just four minutes into the game's opening period, but Alex Kromm (Penticton, BC) scored the equalizer at the 10:10 mark of the opening period.

With 39 seconds remaining in the opening stanza, Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) tallied his first goal of the season, giving UWSP its first lead of the evening, 2-1.

In the second period, 11 penalties kept both teams from putting together a scoring opportunity.

In the third, Saint Mary's capitalized on a Pointers penalty midway through the frame, as Bob Marx tallied the equalizer at the 10:21 mark.

In overtime, the Pointers sent home the first shot they took, as Sharkey pushed past a Josh Daley (Pittsburgh, PA/Bishop Canevin Catholic) pass to give the Pointers the victory.

Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) tallied 17 saves in net on the evening while Saint Mary's Phil Heinle stopped 33 of the Pointers 36 shots on target.

UW-Stevens Point (4-1-0) continues it four-game home stand next weekend, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21-22 with another pair of nonconference contests. The Pointers will host Lake Forest on Friday evening and Adrian College on Saturday for the team's annual Skate with the Pointers event.
