STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The second-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team scored five times in the first 5:01 of the game in an 11-0 victory over Finlandia University in the season opener for both teams on Saturday night at K.B. Willett Arena.
Box Score UW-Stevens Point (1-0-0) scored six goals in the opening period and five in the third period in the game. The Pointers outshot Finlandia (0-1-0) 56-11 in the contest and the 11 goals matched the total UWSP had against the Lions in the second game of last season.
Alex Kromm (Penticton, BC) started the early flurry with a goal 50 seconds into the game.
Nick D'Avolio (North Riverside, IL) and
Skyler Smutek (Seattle, WA) scored a minute apart at 2:38 and 3:38 of the opening period.
Eliot Grauer (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) and
Garrett Ladd (Fenton, MI/Fenton) then scored shorthanded goals at 4:11 and 5:01 as the Pointers chased Finlandia goaltender Jordan Marr.
Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison) made the score 6-0 after one period after being set up by
Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) at the 13:35 mark of the first period. UW-Stevens Point had 20 shots in the second period but was unable to get any by Finlandia's Andrew Brownlee, who replaced Marr.
D'Avolio, Grauer and Kalisz each scored their second goals of the night in the third period, while
Andrew Kolb (Toledo, OH/Toledo Catholic) and
Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) also got on the scoresheet. Kolb's goal came on the power play.
Nine UWSP players tallied multi-point nights, led by three points each by Kalisz, Kolb and
Kevin Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI/North). Sharkey, D'Avolio, Smutek, Ladd, Grauer and
Kyle Brodie (Denver, CO/Northglenn) all had two points each.
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) made 11 saves in the seventh shutout of his UWSP career. Brownlee kept out 43 shots in nearly 55 minutes for Finlandia.
